Electrical Technician

SUMMARY

  • Specializes in the design, construction, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electronic machine control systems including PLC's, PC based machine controls, industrial communications systems, Robotic controls, and other coordinated motion and automatic control systems.
  • Plans layout, installs, and repairs wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment by performing the following duties.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

  • Commission and support new, and legacy, PC and PLC based machine control systems.
  • The commission of a new system may include: installation, integration, configuration, programming and debugging.
  • Support may include: diagnostics of hardware issues, diagnostics of software issues, troubleshooting of I/O, interfacing with various platforms
  • Commissioning and support of new, and legacy, vision systems.
  • The commissioning of a new system may include: Installation, integration, configuration, programming and debugging.
  • Commissioning and support of robotics used in automation.
  • The commission of a new robot may include: installation, integration, configuration, programming and debugging.
  • Understand and diagnose industrial communications systems of various protocols.
  • Read and understand ladder logic including advanced functions and structures such as shift registers, sequencers, FIFO and LIFO stacks, block copies and file copies, and mathematical functions including analog I/O scaling.
  • Understand concepts of error trapping, subroutines, and PID loop tuning.
  • Diagnose and repair AC variable speed drives, AC vector drives, DC drives, and stepper motors.
  • Diagnose and repair systems which employ encoders and resolvers for motion control feedback.
  • Determine the effect of logic/code modifications on other equipment.
  • Fully test logic/code modifications and document changes made to logic/code, wiring, and configuration.
  • Plan new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials, provide access for future maintenance, and avoid unsightly, hazardous, and unreliable wiring, consistent with specifications and local electrical codes.
  • Plan, quote, design, layout, program, and implement machine controls into new production equipment.
  • Incorporate same controls into existing equipment (re-control) to increase machine production and reliability.
  • Prepare blueprints, diagrams, and control program documentation to assist in maintenance of equipment.
  • Measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble, and install electrical conduit.
  • Pull wiring through conduit.
  • Splice wires by stripping insulation from terminal leads, twisting or soldering wires together, and applying tape or terminal caps.
  • Install control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays, and circuit-breaker panels.
  • Test continuity of circuit to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components with testing instruments such as ohmmeter, battery and buzzer, and oscilloscope.
  • Observe functioning of installed equipment or system to detect hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement.
  • Repair faulty equipment or systems.
  • Service and maintain low and medium voltage switchgear.
  • Install, troubleshoot, and maintain industrial control equipment such as motors, variable speed drives, temperature controls, proximity sensors, photoelectric devices, and pressure switches.
  • Completes annual updates of OSHA required training as assigned by supervisor.
  • Reports all safety malfunctions, near hits, and/or injuries to supervisor immediately.
  • Provide analytical support to maintenance and project team leaders as required.
  • Provide appropriate planning and support as required to all projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.



QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have good attendance and work record.



EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Successful completion of state approved industrial electrician apprenticeship program.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience working with electronic machine control systems as an Electrician A or equivalent experience.



LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of other members of the organization.



MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.



REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.



CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • State journeyman certification as industrial electrician or equivalent skilled trade.
